Obama Has Gay Friends

After choosing a pious anti-gay pastor/self-help author for the inaugural invocation (during which time we are supposed to pray that the creator of the universe guides our president), Barack Obama lied while defending his decision:
I am fierce advocate for equality for gay and -- well, let me start by talking about my own views. I think it is no secret that I am a fierce advocate for equality for gay and lesbian Americans.
If Obama is a "fierce advocate" for gay equality, then it's the best kept secret in Washington. In fact, Obama believes gays should remain second class citizens and don't deserve full marriage rights. Like Rick Warren, he thinks marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. He might be friendlier to gays, he might not think they are evil, but the results are the same: no gay marriage.

In 2007 Obama told us what he thinks about the activists who tirelessly work to achieve the rights he takes for granted:
..it would be extraordinarily difficult and distracting to try to build a consensus around marriage for gays and lesbians.
Gays Rights are a distraction. I suppose he means a distraction to his political ambitions. What a "fierce advocate."

Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Obama calls himself a fierce advocate?

Bors, I am glad you're not one of those people who think that now that Obama is elected, we're going to see unicorns crapping rainbows.

Cause you know come January, world hunger will end, terrorism will stop and torture around the world will end because Obama is coming to power.

Good job holding his feet to the fire.

Still, I have hopes for Obama and honestly, from a pragmatic perspective I can see why he's not pushing further on the gay issue. Look at how the US votes on state amendments banning gay marriage. It really would political suicide. I'm not saying its right, it's just pragmatic.

John Cole has really been bringing me around on this topic. Obama wants to repeal DOMA, supports civil unions, wants to give states the choice of whether or not to additionally allow gay marriage, wants gays to be able to openly serve in the military, etc. He's chosen not to tackle the one aspect that is a huge wedge issue and that can divide the country all over again. He's chosen not to give power back to Republicans.

Do I want more? Of course I do. Equality for all is what America is about. But Sumit Khanna is right, he can't crap rainbows, which is pretty much what would be necessary to completely end discrimination against gays during his tenure.

BTW Love the comics.

Aaron: good point. I didn't think of that. Maybe he's a Tyra fan.

clussman: He can't crap rainbows, but he can not crap on rainbow flags by inviting people like Rick Warren.
