The "problem of evil" is the hardest philosophical problem for any theistard... Of course, the problem of evil (without philosophical quotation) is the hardest material problem for everybody.
However, there are only to possible responses:
- Dystheism: "He's a twisted, sadistical bastard".
- Atheism: There's no God.
For ethical reasons, I prefer the second one. Dystheism is the pathway deffended by Abrahamic religions, because they accept that God-Satana is a "twisted, sadistical bastard" against "unsaved people".
I forwarded this one to PZ over at Pharyngula. Hopefully it will help generate some interest in your work.
And now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure "sadistical" isn't a word. Oh, well. Great toon!
If you believed the god in the Jewdeo/Christian faith (ignoring the fact that the Torah/Old Testament is a collection of revamped myths dating back to the Egyptian and Indus River Valley eras), then God must be bi-polar (possibly schizophrenic...which I why God gave us Ergot and helped Hoffman discover how to extract LSD-25).
If you believe in our Founding Fathers, then deism shows that God made a machine and set it in motion. Most deists do not believe in a personal relationship with god and some don't even see the universe created as perfect/flawless[citation needed].
I don't know who or what god is, whether it is some collective consciousness or divine drive as aspiration of humanity or some being that sites outside of the universe; but whatever it is, this idea that the fundamentalist Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc. have put out there, it isn't this. It can't be this.
Matt, I checked out your blog because I saw your cartoon, and was curious who the guy was who created it. There will not be an explanation of suffering that makes sense to you (or the few who posted before me), because you've already made up your mind about the subject. Almost all of the comments here, as well as your cartoon, are emotional responses masked by intellectual descriptions. Your rejection of explanations about human suffering, and I'm guessing probably also rejection of God, are not due to your intellect or the perceived weaknesses of the explanations. It's a matter of your will.

The problem with you atheists is that you PRESUME that "if God exists" he has some sort of a moral obligation to prevent human suffering and thus -conversely- the existence of human suffering "proves" God does not exist. Who says God has an obligation to prevent suffering? You? Why- because he's omnipotent and all powerful and anyone with that much power would definitely use it to end human suffering -? LOL Just because you think that if you were God you would disallow human suffering doesn't mean that a higher power does or would share your sentiment. Extend your sentiment to the wild: would you impose your ban on suffering by a wave of the hand that caused all predators to disappear since they cause the animals they predate to suffer -? LMAO You "liberals" can only think as far as your next Bush-bashing blog post! HAR HAR HAR!!!
As I say in a subsequent post, suffering does not PROVE god doesn't exist--it only confirms he is an asshat if he does.
