Striking Fear In Our Enemies
I'm drawing a scene in "War Is Boring" where David is attending a trade show for defense contractors. So I'm looking up some logos of the exhibitors and I run across this:
Holy shit, are those rainbows shooting out of a fucking falcon's eyes?
ACS was awarded hundreds of millions of dollars in military contracts so you would think they could afford to spend more than $100 on a logo design. The Earth, bird and the crap in its claws are all clip art.
I can see it being approved for an online store for ironic shirts, but I'm trying to imagine the scene where a designer presented a series of roughs to the head honchos. They looked at a few variations and agreed: "We want the one firing rainbows out of its eyes. It's awesome."

Hey, lay off –– that falcon is spreading our gay values across the globe, Finally, a defense project I can get behind!
Good to see Foreigner back out touring.
As always, if you present the client with 3 ideas, they will pick the worst one. Not sure if this was the case here or if they just let the guy who puts together the PowerPoints handle this one.
They should have gone with a snake fighting a truck.
I'm guessing those aren't rays of LGBT pride?
If they were, it might be effective in scaring Al Qaeda.
I'm assuming this was made by a former military intel type hoping to relate to others of same background. I worked at an Air Force HQ, so I've seen many similar to this for new squadrons. It boils down to people drawing a quick sketch (PowerPoint?), picking from a basic palette of colors (I still think it's at random), then creating a huge writeup on what each piece means (especially the color selection for some reason). So when I see this, I think: rainbow eyes (full spectrum sensors), falcon (aerial surveillance), globe (worldwide), weapons in claws (combat ready/ever vigilant/etc), lightning (speed). Then the rest would be on color selection: blue for integrity, sunlight for vigilance, etc. Or maybe it was just something a kid made for his daddy, who knows.
Thanks, Richard. I suspect you are dead on in your assessment. Military patches and logos have their own internal language that unfortunately revolves around bad design, birds of prey, skulls and lightning.
Don't forget, the design needs to appeal to grown men who walk around with lighting bolts on their hats-it needs to appeal to a 3rd grade sense of cool.
