A crazy old man was screaming racist nonsense on a bus...and the guy next to him wouldn't say a word.

I wasn't there. This was for a newspaper.

Exactly.

And, is that a left foot I see on the wussy's right leg? Maybe not.

AND, that drip on the guy's head reminds me of the Dave Chapelle joke that described a similar situation except the crazy guy on the bus was jerking off and someone got hit in the head.

Is this meant to be allegorical?

What's up with all the anonymous hating on this illo? It's for the OC Weekly "Hey You" section. Don't read too deeply into it.

I have to agree with Anonymous on this one: what's the point of saying anything? It's not like the guy was physically threatening! It was just words, and words only harm to the extent you let them harm you. I've met a lot of these jerks who talk tough about foreigners or so and were complete wussies when it came to really act. As we say in french, a barking dog never bites. Racism is unacceptable, but only to the extent it threatens the life of people. For that matter, you could have drawn and published a cartoon mocking the racist guy and it would have been much more effective.

it is naive to think that giving a racist liberty to speak rubbish unpunished is harmless to society. People get the sense what is acceptable by what is permitted. If you read about the dawn of a Third Reich its all about giving those insane individuals a little more space, tolerating them until it was too late.
And no, other people on the bus should not be silent neither. They should have demanded bus to stop and kick the racist off the bus. If he cannot show basic respect to the people around him he should go somewhere else, sit alone and talk to himself.
And I think it is scary that people nowdays believe that nothing they can do (or say) will make any difference.
