Comics Journal Discussion

The long discussion between Ted Rall and I on the state of editorial cartooning is back online at The Comics journal website. Go Read.

Wish I was smart enough to leave a snazzy comment. Anywho, I think that we have become a less literate, less intellectual as a country. Otherwise, we'd not only read but demand more content in what we read.

Man, Ted Rall comes over as a bitter person in that discussion.

Although I like his writing, what he draws seldom adds to the actual joke or political comment he tries to make. If he just does three boxes with text that would have the exact same effect.

In contrast Matt's cartoons are not only little works of art that make you want to look at them and enjoy, but have the same strong emotional punch as Rall's cartoons have, but with less text.

Yes, bitterness all around, I thought. Maybe you guys were in unusually foul moods, but even as someone who agrees with many of your criticisms, the extensive bitching about other cartoonists comes off as smug (not unlike a humorless, uninspiring editorial cartoon). I guess it's somewhat understandable, given that newspapers are taking a major dump, and taking paid gigs with them. But who honestly expects to get a cushy job by the mainstream media to publish wildly unpopular political opinions? I mean, it would be nice, but capitalism is a bitch.

Also, I'm surprised neither of you mentioned Mr. Fish, especially with all the talk about anti-Bush cartoonists failing to take on Obama. There's Mr. Fish, and then there's everyone else, IMHO.

Cheers.
