Aerial Activism
I'm a little late with a Joe Stack cartoon – my schedule sometimes does that to me – but I wanted to point out that white privilege apparently extends to domestic terrorism. Glenn Greenwald wrote well about the media's inability to drop the T-word on a non-Muslim.
Just imagine the discussion if: Joe Stack was a radical Muslim. Joe Stack was a black militant Marxist opposed to capitalism. Joe Stack as he was, but with a larger plane that killed, say, one hundred people instead on one. Tinkering with one small factor such as race or religion is the deciding factor in whether conservatives will set up a Facebook shrine for the attacker or for the imposition of martial law. They are unprincipled maniacs.
I'm sure we'll see more attacks soon.

Hadn't heard about the facebook thing, but reading up on it, apparently one of the reasons he was so ticked at the IRS was because at one point he had tried to evade paying taxes by claiming his house as a church. Although, now that I think about, I do consider my toilet to be something of a shrine, so maybe there is something to that.
Matt, why do you hate white people?
Quite honestly, there's a reason the US hasn't signed on to any major international definitions of terrorism -- nobody will agree to wording that ends "so long as they're not an American."
The notion of not calling Stack a terrorist is so transparent. If the media call Stack a terrorist:
1. They can't keep the population properly frightened of the scary scary Muslims coming to kill us all. They lose the Pavlov effect.
2. They would alienate their core advertising base, which is essentially Ford truck driving, NASCAR watching white men. Call Stack a terrorist and they might just boycott the sponsors (which they're fond of doing).
The funny thing is how the right has adopted Stack as their own. Have they even read his manifesto? In addition to the govenrnment he bashes organized religion, greed and corporations. Stack was mad at everyone and everything. I doubt he would have even claimed a particluar ideology.
Seems to me he's a freedom fighter and we all owe him a moment of silence. Standing up against those socialist terrorist lovers and all.
:P
Unprincipled maniacs indeed. Well put Matt.
If he'd crashed his plane into the Fox News hq or Rush Limbaugh's house, he'd be a terrorist. But since he crashed it into a "big government" building he is a hero to conservatives?
You've got your facts wrong on this one. We now know that he was a leftist. You really should get to know a Libertarian before you start bashing them.
